Dear Parents, Good day!                                                                                                                                                                                                       What a wonderful day it is to be able to breathe and smell all the wonderful scents that our creator gave to us, like the smell of flowers; can you imagine just for one moment you were unable to breathe or smell? I can just imagine what George Floyd felt like when he was unable to breathe because another person took that basic function from him.

I have kept silent about the entire situation because I thought Politic had no place in educating our children, however, this is not politics, this is the basic human rights of every person on earth, to be able to live a life filled with the assumption that you are free and the assumption that this world in which we live will give all of us the opportunity to feel safe and protected especially by those who took an oath to protect and serve us as citizens.

I was appalled at what I saw on national television several days ago with the killing of George Floyd; what a disgrace to see another human being take the life of another without any remorse at all. When did we become a nation of hate and disregard of life? when did we become so filled with rage and power that we want to dominate those who are helpless to fight back? what has happened to this country I love so much?

I know there are some that are choosing to use violence to take away from the injustice and the message that we as citizens of this country want the world to hear. We are tired of the injustice, we are tired of being treated as second class citizens, we are tired of being forced to turn the other cheek, we are tired of being afraid for our sons because they are always seen as a threat to others who don’t understand us, see us as inferior or are just afraid of our existence.

As a person of faith and being an educator of elementary school children, I have an obligation to my God and to these children. I only know love even though I have experienced racism in my own life. My job is to teach my students about the love of God for all of us and the love of our neighbors as we love ourselves. I will continue to do this and will never stray from this wonderful relationship I have formed with my creator, but I will never be silent when it comes to injustice, racism, and intolerance of others.  Our school is of a diverse nature, mostly minority families who have lived as I have to the injustice that takes place in this country. I thank God each day that I am in an organization that puts God first and then the needs of its families.

As a school community we pray first for the family of Mr. Floyd, next for the people who are protesting, that their message will be heard, and changes will take place. However, I also condemn those who seek to destroy, to hurt and to take away for the goal of this movement. Please stop with your destruction, we are still in a pandemic and do not need this unruly behavior from anyone.

May God bless each one of you, be safe and try not to judge somethings you cannot understand unless you walk a mile in that person’s shoe. God Bless.

Margaret Tyndall - Principal

**A notice below from the Superintendent:

Dear Parents and Guardians of 8th Grade Students,

I am writing to provide an update regarding the Class of 2020 8th grade graduation. We understand that it is disappointing for your child to end their final Catholic elementary school year without being able to celebrate the 8th grade graduation milestones with friends, family and their school community. However, we must still be ever mindful of the New York City and New York State safety and wellness guidelines.

The guidelines state:

- We must always be 6 feet apart (Social Distancing)

- We must always wear a mask

- We must never congregate in a group larger than 10 people

- We must never be in contact with people, if we are showing any signs of sickness

We have all seen events on television celebrating graduation activities, but each event planned in the Diocese of Brooklyn is bound by New York City and New York State Guidelines. A decision has been made to move to a virtual graduation ceremony, considering the current orders regarding stay-at-home orders, social distancing requirements and restrictions on large gatherings. This very difficult decision was made with the safety of our students, staff, families and community in mind. While we know this is not how you imagined your child ending their elementary school experience, please know that your school leaders are doing everything in their power to make the Class of 2020 graduation celebration special and memorable for your child and their families.

In the coming weeks, your school principal will be communicating the plan for all graduation activities and events.

May God, Our Father bless your child as they graduate and begin the next chapter of their educational journey. I would like to close this letter with this Parent Prayer… May God Bless your graduates May He keep them safe and sound; healthy in mind and soul May they be ever aware of the awaiting crown as they navigate life May they grow closer to God in and through their upcoming experiences May they grow closer to their loved ones in and through their experiences May God bless you, the parents, as you watch your children jump May God keep them free of shame and us free of worry. Amen

Sincerely,

Thomas Chadzutko Thomas Chadzutko, Ed.D.

Week of Monday 4/13/2020

Dear Families:

As we go through this crisis together, there are so many needs that continue to grow. We are continually praying for you and your loved ones so that we may heal and emerge from these difficult times. We recognize the financial burden many have experienced as the school endures its own financial struggles.

Our partner scholarship organization, Futures in Education, has established a Relief Fund to assist families affected by the COVID-19 health crisis in completing their 2019/20 tuition payments.

You are invited to complete this form ONLY if your family has been directly impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis, resulting in a reduction or loss of income, and you are seeking tuition relief for the 2019/2020 academic year. Funding is very limited, and it is critical that we are able to assist those most affected by this crisis. Please only apply if your family has been affected in a way that it will not be possible for you to complete this year’s tuition payments.

We will work with Futures in Education to assess the overall need and funding received to determine how we may best help our families. The application will be open from now through May 15, 2020 and may be found at www.futuresineducation.org/covid19app.

Please alert us directly if you need this assistance so we are aware of your situation. This is a requirement of the fund.

In addition, we encourage you to apply for the regular financial aid program administered by Futures in Education for the 2020-21 academic year now, by going to  www.futuresineducation.org/scholarships

Note: Returning Teddy J. Forstmann recipients should apply for regular tuition assistance for 20-21 through Children’s Scholarship Fund/Civicore. Instructions have been emailed to you.

Please contact Futures in Education at 718.965.7340 or by email: Scholarships@FuturesinEducation.org if you have any questions or need assistance.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tyndall

Week of Monday 3/30/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Hope all is well. We are now entering week three of being out of the school building. I know this is a trying time for everyone, especially the children, who are missing social interactions with their peers, teachers and the OLPH family. Please be very mindful that our children take their cue from the adults around them, so please be careful how we speak when they are nearby, be mindful of what they watch on television and give them all the love and support you can.

Please try to keep your child occupied and safe with schoolwork and other activities to keep their little minds from what is transpiring around them. I know this might seem like a herculean task; however, we must try to keep them in some normalcy as possible. If they ask questions about the Coronavirus, please speak with them honestly, but try to do it without panicking. Speak with your child about the importance of taking necessary positive preventive measures to help them from getting sick.

The teachers and I are working hard to keep in touch with the students and you, the parents. Please know that we are all in this struggle together, and I know we will come out of this stronger than ever. Please continue to pray for us, as we will continue to pray for you. God Bless you all.

Mrs. Tyndall

Principal

P.S. Please note there will be no distance learning starting from Holy Thursday, April 9 to the 17, 2020 for the Easter break. Classes will resume on April 20, 2020.

Estimados Padres,

Sra. Margaret Tyndall

Principal
